Employing a healthcare professional with foreign qualifications

Would you like to recruit healthcare professionals from abroad? In regulated professions, the qualifications must be recognized if they are to work in Switzerland. The recognition procedure is demanding and arduous – even for employers. Help make the SRC qualification recognition procedure straightforward for your staff.

Before recognition

You can support your employees before the recognition procedure:

  • Check on recognition.swissOpens a new window whether the qualification is for a regulated profession and which authority is responsible for recognizing it. In regulated professions, the qualifications must be recognized if the person is to work in Switzerland.

  • Check whether your cantonal Ministry of Public Health or the cantonal medical service sets conditions for recruiting staff from abroad.

During the recognition process

  • Provide suitable working conditions that are conducive to learning.

  • Help the applicant to compile all the necessary documentation. A list is provided in the recognition application.

  • If the applicant needs to complete any other qualifications, i.e. undergo supplementary training, they will receive the decision along with various information sheets that explain how the gaps in the qualifications can be filled. You can support the applicant by reading through the decision and any information sheets together.

IMPORTANT

Providing information

If you as the employer would like to receive details of the recognition application submitted by your employee, the applicant must grant their consent in advance by email to: registry@redcross.chOpens a new window.

Compensatory measures

If the professional qualification is significantly different from the Swiss qualification, the applicant must complete compensatory measures. For example:

  • An adaptation course

  • An adaptation course combined with an additional training course

  • An aptitude test

As an employer, you must provide a suitable mentor during the adaptation course. If no compensatory measures are needed or an option different from the adaptation course is chosen, no evaluation from a mentor is necessary.

Mentor during the adaptation course

As a mentor, you check and evaluate the work of the applicant during the adaptation course, with or without additional training course. You also conduct appraisal interviews with the applicant.

After recognition

After the recognition procedure, the applicant will receive an attestation of recognition through the post. The recognition will also be registered in the National Register of Healthcare Professionals GesReg / NAREGOpens a new window.
